Emerald City Comic Con - March 4th-6th

Washington State Convention Center

800 Convention Place

Seattle, WA

The Washington State Convention Center will be Geek Central for 3 days of comics, games, costumes and misbehavin'!   We'll meet in Room 4A for the movie, Browncoats: Redemption on Saturday @ 5 pm.
Bring those brown coats and Jayne Hats!
How to find us: It's a room full of Browncoats. Just stand up and start singing "The Hero of Canton".

Saturday, March 5, 20110 - Room 4A

5:00 PM

If you're going to the Emerald City Comic Con to hang out with a few thousand of your closest geek friends, then come join the rest of the Browncoat crew for a viewing of the fan-made movie, Browncoats: Redemption.  We'll be in Room 4A (right after the William Shatner Q&A) and seating will be tough. Don't fret, there will certainly be some Firefly fans staying in the room.

Why should you see a fan-made film of one of your favorite TV shows EVER? Because proceeds from the sale of the DVD goes to charities worth supporting; like Equality Now and Kids Need to Read. The director, Michael Dougherty will also be present for a post-viewing Q&A.

(ps - no charge for the movie but it'll cost ya to get into the convention - see the ECCC website for ticket prices)

Info on the movie:

BROWNCOATS: REDEMPTION
Browncoats: Redemption is a fan-made sequel to Serenity. It is a feature film length, space western adventure that follows the same genre as Serenity and its predecessor, the television series Firefly. It takes place three months after the events on the colonized planet Miranda. We find Captain Laura Matthews and the crew of Redemption unintentionally thrown into a situation that some view as the potential catalyst for the second unified rise of the Independents against the Alliance, since Unification Day. The Alliance is looking for a scapegoat for Miranda while those unhappy with the Alliance are looking for a rallying cry to take action. Through all this, a secret about Laura is exposed that shakes the very core of the crew, threatening to break it up, challenge the trust that Laura has earned with the Browncoats, and undo all the efforts she has put into place to keep a sense of peace in her life since the first Unification War. The movie is followed by a Q&A.

Live Performance of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog! Coming in January!

Posted by: Traevynn

January 28 - February 12, 2011 at 8pm
In The Allen Theatre - ACT
Running Time: 1 hours, 30 minutes

Fresh off a sold-out 5 week run, Seattle's Balagan Theatre transfers their greatest hit to ACT Theatre for what is sure to be a CANNOT MISS Seattle theater event.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog tells the incredible story of an aspiring villain... who blogs and sings. In this backwards world, the villain is the hero, and the hero is the villain. But which one will get the girl? Created by Joss Whedon, best known as the creator and showrunner of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse, this internet sensation combines catchy music, wry humor, and comic book archetypes into a show that is now ready to be experienced in a whole new way - on a live stage.

This is a guest production; not produced by ACT.

NOTE: THIS SHOW SOLD OUT FAST THE LAST TIME SO LET'S MAKE A PLAN!

2011 CSTS Promotional Art Contest Rules

In its five-year history, Can't Stop The Serenity has raised more than half a million dollars for Equality Now. We can do even more good works this year, but only if people show up! That's where you come in. Since we've been doing this for half a decade now, the novelty factor has worn off, which means it's more important than ever before to build excitement for CSTS. The logo, poster and t-shirts are critical tools for raising awareness about the event, building excitement, and getting people into theaters around the world.

Here are the complete rules for this year's contest:

THE CAUSE:

  • CSTS 2011 and Equality Now

THE SHINY STUFF:

  • The winner’s artwork will be used as the basis for the T-shirt, poster and promo for CSTS 2011.
  • Additionally, the winner’s artwork will be featured prominently throughout CSTS’s new and improved website for 2011.

THE RULES:

  • All artwork you submit must be your own. If you plan to incorporate any stock imagery in your entry, you must have documentation showing that you have permission to use and reproduce it.
  • It should go without saying, but we'll say it anyway. Don't use copyrighted artwork in your submission.
  • Because this is about Equality Now and Peace in the ‘Verse, there should be no overt violence portrayed within the art.
  • The winner’s artwork will be used by CSTS for the purposes of the 2011 CSTS Screenings and events, and for additional promotional purposes until the 2012 artwork has been chosen. No other compensation will be given to the winner.

ARTWORK GUIDELINES

  • Each entry should include the following:

    • An isolated version of the logo (no background images)
    • A black and white version of the logo
    • A mockup of the logo as a poster (may contain additional text and artwork)
    • A mockup of the logo as a T-shirt (may contain additional text and artwork)

  • You must use the CSTS logo and have it displayed predominantly within the piece you are submitting. You can download various versions of the logo here.
  • The logo may be used in many different ways, including, but not limited to stationery, patches, stickers, web banners, icons, etc. The more flexible your design, the better.
  • We will accept any artwork in almost any format: vectorized, rasterized (bitmapped) or real life based (like a sketch or painting) so as to make it as easy as possible for people to enter. We RECOMMEND a vector based format such as the ones listed below but will also accept raster formats and even physical artwork if need be.
  • Because of this, we reserve the right to translate / digitize / clean up any artwork we get to a format and minimum level of quality (resolution / smoothness) needed to look good in all areas that it will be used (web, print, merchandising, video, etc)
  • You can create a full color piece of artwork, but it is RECOMMENDED that you create a design that lends itself well to being rendered down to four color, three color, grayscale, AND black and white as this makes it easier to use the design in the various mediums cheaply and accurately (Screen Printing, Dye Sub Printing, Inkjet Printing, Web, etc...) Also, we would recommend using the RGB color space and not the CMYK color space for your digital creation. Transparency / using an alpha channel is allowed and encouraged if needed. Anti-aliasing will be applied if necessary.
  • We will make our best effort to remain true to the original artwork, but for best results, least amount of work for us, and to guarantee highest possible quality, we RECOMMEND the following vector formats (in order from best to worst):

    • EPS - Encapsulated Postscript File (Vector Mode, NOT Bitmap Mode)
    • SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics
    • AI - Adobe Illustrator File
    • Most other vector formats such as PDF, SWF, EMF and WMF will also be accepted but are not preferred

  • If you prefer to submit your artwork in a raster (bitmapped) based format, we will still accept it, but we may translate it to a vector based format if, for example, the resolution is too low. For raster based submissions, we RECOMMEND a print dpi setting such as between 300 dpi and 600 dpi and we RECOMMEND the following raster formats (in order from best to worst):

    • TIF - Tagged Image File
    • PSD - Photo Shop Document
    • XCF - G.I.M.P. Document
    • Most other raster formats such as PNG, BMP, JPG, and GIF will also be accepted but are not preferred

  • If you do not have access to or experience with professional graphic design programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop and do not wish to purchase any specifically for this contest, we would recommend using Inkscape (found athttp://www.inkscape.org ) for Vector based formats. If you must use raster based, we recommend the GNU Image Manipulation Program aka G.I.M.P. (found at http://www.gimp.org ) or GIMPshop (found at http://www.gimpshop.com ), a version of GIMP tailored to people who are familiar with Adobe Photoshop. All of these programs are legal to download and use free of charge.
  • Last but not least, if you are not a digital artist, and would like to create your artwork in a real world medium, such as sketching or painting, you may mail the artwork to us if you are not confident in your ability to acquire a high quality scan of said artwork. We can scan it, but we reserve the right to translate it into a vector based format, which may lose some of the nuances of the medium it was originally created on. Also, we can not guarantee the ability to return the artwork to you.

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY

  • Submissions will be accepted beginning Monday, January 10, 2011, and must be received no later than January 31, 2011 by 11:59 P.M. PST in order to be considered for this contest.
  • You may submit up to three pieces for consideration.
  • All entries and questions should be submitted to artdirector@cantstoptheserenity.com.
  • If you need to mail your submission, email artdirector@cantstoptheserenity.com for instructions and a mailing address.
  • All entries which meet the guidelines will be posted on February 7, 2011, PST on the official CSTS website, to be voted on by the general public. The voting period ends February 14, 2011 at 11:59 P.M. PST. In the event of a tie, the Global Team will choose the winning piece.

ONE LAST NOTE

Universal has no problem with CSTS running this contest. However, it should be noted that Universal in no way officially approves the artwork (i.e. it is not their official creation for Serenity) and that the sale and promotion thereof is solely at the discretion of CSTS. Please note that the inspiration for your artwork should come from movie Serenity and not the TV Series - Firefly.

Good luck! We can’t wait to see your submissions!

Announcing a new Meetup for Seattle Browncoats!

What: Planning Meeting for CSTS 2011! Yep, we're getting an early start this year.

When: Sunday, August 8, 2010 1:00 PM

Where: Wayward Coffeehouse
8570 Greenwood Ave N.- East side of the street
Seattle, WA 98103
(206) 706-3240

Seattle Browncoats Charities want YOUR ideas, thoughts and suggestions for Can't Stop the Serenity 2011!
Gather 'round the big table at the Wayward Coffeehouse and let us know what's on your mind. See a way to make the event better? Let us know. Have an idea on something new and different? We want to hear it.

After hosting 5 yearly events, we want to make the next one better than ever and we need your help to do it. Tell us your suggestions and if you can't make it to the meeting, feel free to email your thoughts to info[@]cstsseattle[dot]org.

Here is some general information about the event:

  • MOHAI will not be available as a venue due to the move into the Armory at South Lake Union. They won't have a theater in the new space.
  • We would LOVE to have the cast, crew and Joss himself come to our event, so if you know of a donor or sponsor willing to give several thousand dollars to us to book our BDH's, then by all means, let us know ASAP!
  • Dates during the summer will overlap with lots of other events happening at the same time. There is no one weekend that is totally clear of events.
  • FOX has not given permission for us to show ANY Firefly episodes or commentary.
  • Buffy and Angel episodes cannot be shown unless released by WB or UPN and they have been asked numerous times.
  • Universal permits CSTS events to show the movie, "Serenity" but not the commentary. This may change at some point but we don't have control over that. The Global CSTS Committee deals with Universal to get permission for all the registered cities.

Come by, hang out, listen to the ideas and give us your impressions. We really want to know.

Announcing a new meeting for Seattle Browncoats!

What: Volunteer Meeting for Seattle's Can't Stop the Serenity Event in July

When: Sunday, June 27, 2010 1:00 PM
Where: Wayward Coffee House
8570 Greenwood Ave N. E. side of the street
Seattle, WA 98103
(206) 706-3240

Time to grab those brown coats, shine up those mid-bulk transports and execute a Crazy Ivan to the Wayward Coffeehouse on Sunday, June 27th at 1 pm!

If you feel like lending a hand to them's that need it during our 5th charity screening of "Serenity", well then, join the crew on Sunday and come learn the secret information you're gonna want to know...
nope...can't tell you now, then it wouldn't be secret, would it?

Should the Alliance cause you to miss the meeting and you really, really want to help out,
send a wave to volunteer@... and let us know. Some kind of shiny plan can be worked out.

Here's the small print from our volunteer coordinator if you've read this far:
"Here are the jobs we have:
line monitors,
ticket sellers,
will call,
concessions sellers,
food assistants,
door monitors,
ushers in the theater,
and new this year -- a talent assistant who can help with the performers (keep them on schedule, etc.).
We will also need roving raffle ticket sellers, and people to monitor the raffle table.

Some of these positions will not permit you to see the movie, Dr. Horrible, or the performers, but they are essential to keep the event successful.
Please come to the meeting -- or E-mail me your interests. Also, if you
have any special skills or areas you are particularly interested in, please let me know."

March 10, 2010 -
Seattle Browncoats are Holding the Valley @ Norwescon 33!

Ni Hao, Browncoats:

Norwescon 33 is coming up rather quickly (3 weeks!!?) so here’s the situation….
The Seattle Browncoats have a fan table - (hopefully in the area around the bar and espresso stand again but I’m not sure till I get there) - and we’re gonna have all manner of flyers, giveaways and blackmarket beagles (no, not really- even tho’ the droppings are rather smallish) for the folks at the con to scoop into their bags.

Iff’n you feel like volunteering for a mission - like guarding the goodies and tech equipment - then we have shifts for manning the table. There ain’t much to it, just talk really nice to the folk who stop by, tell ‘em about our friendly little group and recruit them if they’re interested in joining us for a shindig or two. We’ll even have a trivia contest and door prizes to give away and the Con goers LOVE goodies to take home.

Norwescon 33 in 2010 will be from April 1st - 4th (Thursday - Sunday) and we generally work the table from around 9 or 10 a.m. till around 5:00 p.m. There’s a lot of flexability involved so don’t worry if you can only do an hour or two. Everyone needs a potty break and some lunchtime nibbles so if that’s all you can do, then we’d take it as a kindness. And time to sit and knit a Jayne Hat is always well spent! :)

I can put up a link to the Con schedule when it’s available so you can peruse the plethora of panels and decide what you want to attend and what you can live without. If you volunteer to tend the table and don’t want to pay the cashy money for the entire day or weekend, we have an extra con badge that you can use to attend an event without Security tossing you to the Reavers for sneaking past the “official con attendees only” signs.

Let me know the time(s) you'd like to volunteer so I can let others know what’s available and what’s taken. I’ll set up a list of days and times as people let me know what they’d like to do. Hint: Saturday always has plenty of folk willing to table-sit.

Questions?? Contact me via email at robyn [at] seattlebrowncoats [dot] org and we’ll chat.
This is a shiny way for new folks and regulars to get to know each other so feel free to stop by the table whether you volunteer or not! If you’re just going to stay in the lobby, there’s no need to buy admission to the con but you won’t be able to see all the cool presentations. I’m just sayin’…..

Browncoats Rock!
xie xie,
Traevynn
aka Robyn - Table Captain

Kazia has graciously agreed to stay on as Web Guru, but I'd love to offer her an able asst. Each position could really use a back up too in case of emergencies

PM or email me christine@cantstoptheserenity.com your interest in which position, a paragraph on why, how you'd be brilliant in it. "

Come to dominoes and hear about the fun we have planned for Can't Stop the Serenity! Then jump into the fray and "hold the Valley".

What: Volunteers' Meeting for Seattle's Can't Stop the Serenity Event!

When: June 7, 2009 11:00 AM

Where:

500 Westlake Ave N
Seattle, WA 98109
206.621.2045

All Hands On Deck!! Things are going to get pretty interesting in the next few weeks and we're looking for some shiny Browncoats to lend a hand before, during and after our upcoming charity event. If you feel the urge to rack up some karma points or work off those darn community service hours (just kidding, I doubt the court would consider us a public service), then come on down and join us for the first volunteer meeting for Can't Stop the Serenity - Seattle Style! Bring your ideas, donations for the raffles and smiling faces to Uptown Espresso at 500 Westlake Ave N. near South Lake Union; 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 7th.

And wait! That's not all!! You can also purchase your very own ticket to the movie and/or event right then and there! Tickets have been selling steadily and we don't want anyone left out in the Black so we'll bring 'em to the meeting so volunteers can have their tickets in hand when they leave.

We'll have flyers to pass out to folks who want to help promote our shiny event and a list of what we need help with before, during and after the event.
Volunteers are how we pull off this shindig and any assistance is greatly appreciated. Plus it keeps the organizers from having exploding heads.
If you can't make the meeting, feel free to email one of the organizers and let us know what's on your mind.

Here's a short list of tasks to look over and decide what might work for you:
Getting the Signal out - passing out flyers/posters/attending local cons and promoting/blogging about the event/contacting media folk about this fantastic worldwide grassroots effort to support a charity.

Gathering up the schwag - contacting businesses about donating door prizes/raffle items.

"Official" photographers and/or videographers - we want folks to document our hard work before and after the event.

Ticket Sellers - get your friends, family, co-workers, strangers on the street...whoever...to buy tickets in advance so we can afford to put this event on without digging into our own pockets for cashy money.

Day of the Event folks - Taking tickets, selling schwag, raffle table sales, ushers, gofers, sound system experts, Emcees, anything else we'd need on the day of the screening.

Other opportunities will come up during the weeks prior to the screening so let us know what you want to help out with and we'll find something that fits your talents.

Can't Stop the Serenity on July 18th is going to be a fantastic day filled with the Big Damn Movie - Serenity; raffle prizes; a catered buffet; Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog screening; costumes; Browncoats and a shipload of black market beagles (kidding again-, they're really bobble-headed Geisha dolls). :)
You want to be there, we want you there, supporting Equality Now is a good thing and you'll get a dose of Firefly, Serenity and our Big Damn Heroes. It's a win-win situation!

April 9, 10, 11 & 12, 2009 - Norwescon 32

Ni Hao, Browncoats!
Norwescon is coming up rather quicker than I'd anticipated so listen up fast....

We have a table - (hopefully in the same area around the bar again but I'm not sure till I get there) - and we're gonna have all manner of flyers, giveaways and blackmarket beagles (no, not really- even tho' the droppings are rather smallish) for the folks at the con to scoop into their bags.
Iff'n you feel like volunteering for a mission - like guarding the goodies and tech equipment - then we have shifts for manning the table. There ain't much to it, just talk really nice to the folk who stop by, tell 'em about our friendly little group and recruit them if they're interested in joining us for a shindig or two.

Norwescon will be from April 9th - 12th (Thursday - Sunday) Norwescon 2009 link and we generally work the table from around 9 - 10 a.m. till around 5:00 p.m. There's a lot of flexability involved so don't worry if you can only do an hour or two. Everyone needs a potty break and some lunchtime nibbles so if that's all you can do, then we'd take it as a kindness.
Here's the link to the Norwescon schedule so you''ll know what time you'll be available. Norwescon Panel schedule

Post your volunteer time on the message board thread so others will know what's available and what's taken. I'll set up a list of days and times as people let me know what they'd like to do.
Questions??
Contact me through the Meetup board (click on my name under Organizer and send an email) and we'll chat.  Meetup link

This is a shiny way for new folks and regulars to get to know each other so feel free to stop by the table whether you volunteer or not! If you're just going to stay in the lobby, there's no need to buy admission to the con but you won't be able to see all the cool presentations. I'm just sayin'.....

Browncoats Rock!

An evening of geek-inspired live music for Browncoats, filkers, and geeks of any kind. We are getting a double-whammy (or would that be a triple-whammy?) of outstanding performers with a double-bill of Marian Call (featured on QuantumMechanix.com and at www.mariancall.com) and our perennial favorite filkers, Vixy & Tony (www.vixyandtony.com). There is also at least one special guest who will be performing as well.

Please note: in order to accommodate the double line-up, we are getting started a little earlier than most of our live music shows, we'll be kicking off the night with Vixy & Tony at 7:15 pm.

What: an extraordinary evening of geek-inspired filk with Marian Call and Vixy & Tony
Date: Saturday, March 28th

So read on, brave Browncoat, and prepare to be amazed....

============

So the day's are getting shorter and the weather's a bit glum but hey that doesn't stop a Seattle Browncoat! Join us for a short trip across the Puget Sound on a Washington State ferry. This will be a prime opportunity to get to know your fellow Browncoats over a warm beverage and enjoy the best view around.

Meet at the Coleman Dock, Pier 52 by 9:50 am (no later than this - the ferry departs at 10:15 and you need time to buy tickets)
Passenger Fares (Adult) are $6.70 each, (Youth - 6-18) $5.40 each. Leave the pets at home, please. Washington State Ferry Pet Policy: Pets must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times. Pets, except service animals, are not allowed in terminal buildings or above the car decks, unless they are in a pet carrier.

We'll wait for walk-on boarding between the Ticketing counter and Matt’s Gourmet Hot Dogs.

(Mmmm, good dogs!)
Ride the ferry du jour (10:15 departure) to Bremerton, where we will convince the captain to turn the boat around and ride back to Seattle. The trip should take just over two hours, returning around 12:30 pm.

Good things to know:
Bundle up, it's November after all.
Bring your camera, if it's a clear day you might see birds, whales or maybe a private floaty island.
Smoking is not allowed on the ferry.
Feel free to take your vehicle on the ferry but it's gonna cost ya a bundle of cashy money and you won't be able to get back over to Seattle until the next ferry run.

Food Service:
There is a food court at Coleman Dock (Commuter Comforts Espresso Café and Wine Bar, Candy Lane, World Wrapps, Caffe Appassionato Coffee Company, Andy's Alaskan Subs & Matt’s Gourmet Hot Dogs). The ferry has a galley and limited vending machines. You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages but no alcohol (some ferries sell beer and wine in their galley).

Sept. 15th, 2008

At such a moment of emotional distress and upheaval, the hard realities of just getting by can be especiallly overwhelming. Knowing that there are challenging times ahead for Kikki as a result of the heartrending loss of her husband, friend, and partner - we would like to extend the suggestion to our fellow Browncoats that if you feel inclined and able, a financial contribution to a Browncoat Memorial Fund in remembrance of Morgan Harper which Kikki can use as she sees fit would be welcome.

There may be more formal requests by Kikki and/or Morgan's family in future that memorials be made to specific charities but we would like to gather some finanical assistance for Kikki's immediate use.

If you are able to donate to such a fund, you may do so at Wayward Coffeehouse through Saturday, 9/20. Cash or checks payable to Kirsten Harper can be left at Wayward during any open hours. For those of you who are not in the immediate area, you may send checks to Wayward Coffeehouse at 8570 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle WA 98103.

We will present what we have gathered to Kikki as a memorial from the Seattle Browncoats which she may use for whatever purpose she needs.

If you have questions about this effort, please contact us via email: wayward (at) waywardcoffee (dot) com

Your thoughts and kindness are greatly appreciated,

The Seattle Browncoats

Sept. 12th, 2008

It is with great sorrow and grief that I send a wave to our Browncoat crew, both near and far, that one of our members; Morgan - husband to Kikki; has unexpectedly passed away on Sept. 12th, 2008.
We grieve together on the loss of a good man and a faithful Browncoat. Morgan gave his time and good humor to our shindigs and gatherings and he will be greatly missed.

Our regularly scheduled Domino Day will be on hiatus this upcoming Sunday, Sept. 14th but several of our crew will be at the Wayward Coffeehouse around 11:30 a.m. to raise a latte or two in Morgan's memory. Please feel free to join us.  Information on formal memorial services will be coming in the near future.

Please keep Kikki in your thoughts these upcoming weeks. "When you can't walk, you crawl...and when you can't crawl...well, you know the rest."
